As on most layouts, road crews typically traverse the bulk of the layout. It’s no different on the Ste. Gen sub. The crew boards № 92 sitting on the main at Derby Jct and begins working the MoPac and Bonne Terre sub interchanges. You’ll frequently see lots of empties coming from Bonne Terre as well as lead loads. The MoPac forwards a lot of bridge traffic across the river.
Seventeen miles north of Derby Jct sits Millers with a single industry – Shapiro Brothers scrap metal [pronounced with a long “i” as in shuh-py-ro]. There is a loading module fixed to the fascia trim to use when loading. Each gondola takes 60 seconds to load. I prefer live loads, but there’s not an automatic crane. You will have to use the 5-fingered variety – I’ve also provided a “track broom” for the inevitable scrap spillage. Use it, or face the real possibility of a derailment.
Just north of Weingarten, you’ll come to the yard limits. Hold here while awaiting entry clearance from the yardmaster before proceeding. Once inside yard limits, no need to worry about switching as all of the local industries are handled by other trains. There are semaphores at the grade crossing just beyond Ste. Genevieve and be prepared to stop. You may need to contact the Tower Operator if he does not see you.
Stay in contact with the Yardmaster as you near the Ste. Genevieve depot and Middle Yard – he will provide directions on entry. Once tied up, have a cup of coffee and await a crew call.
The Yardmaster will call you for more trains. Be sure to grab the train’s clipboard with your orders, switchlists and Waybills.
- Mosher Switcher (MS) works Peerless Lime ONLY, pulling and spotting cars as needed. The crew is required to load their own cars – follow the instructions on the fascia trim for loading lime on tracks 3 and 4 (unfortunately, I don’t have live loads for lime). Once work is finished, grab your paperwork and return to Middle Yard.
- № 93 is a scheduled freight train and works Weingarten & Derby Jct. If there are cars destined for Millers (a facing point spur), drop them on the siding at Derby Jct with their Waybills and let № 92 deal with them tomorrow.
- An occasional passenger extra is run during a session and the road crew will be called.
